The Washtenaw County Food Policy Council has several Policy Action Teams (PAT) that meet regularly throughout the year to work on priority policy issues. Below is a list and a link to each PAT page where you can learn more about what each group is working on and where they meet!
FARMERS & INSTITUTIONAL PURCHASING
The Farmers & Institutional Purchasing Policy Action Team is made up of farmers and non-farmers alike. We are interested in Washtenaw food policy as it relates to farmers and seek to create a voice for growers through examining policy. Our goals also include the need for education and research in the production of local food.
FOOD ACCESS & NUTRITION
The Food Access & Nutrition Policy Action Team works to make healthy food more accessible in Washtenaw County and beyond.
FOOD WASTE & PACKAGING
The Food Waste & Packaging Policy Action Team is:
- Defining the most appropriate policy and advocacy actions to complement actions carried out at a national and local level
- Consulting stakeholders and experts to identify opportunities at all levels of the food chain to minimize food waste without compromising food safety
- Developing policy and educational campaigns around food waste prevention and food waste recovery systems from businesses, institutions, residents and agencies.
PLANNING & ZONING
The Planning & Zoning Policy Action Team examines land use issues across the food system as they relate to zoning and planning ordinance and regulations. We aim to share and establish best practices and model ordinances, and give planning expertise to community issues that arise. This Policy Action Team is currently on hiatus.
The Pollinators Policy Action Team convenes to recommend and support that institutions within the county take measures to preserve our essential pollinator populations by utilizing pesticide-free grounds management practices.
The Young Eaters Policy Action Team is currently on hiatus as we plan for future opportunities to involve youth voice in the council.
